Women in the Pulpit

Knoxville News Sentinel — Women in the Pulpit

Why do I love the United Methodist Church? There are lots of reasons; this is just one among many. My denomination recognizes that God calls women to lead the church too. Now if we really could get through the “stained-glass ceiling” mentioned in this article.

I work in a region of the country where still many United Methodist Churches shun even the idea of female pastors, much less the thought of allowing one in “our pulpit.” It has only been in the last few years that my Conference appointed a woman to a “large-church” (~1400 members, 700 avg. worship). Everyone brings some gift to the table, man or woman, God has gifted us all to serve in ministry to his Kingdom. The unique gifts of each are an important part of the work and ministry of the church. I hope that in the coming years we will see more such appointments.
